High School Mentorship Program
The Scripps Alcohol Research Center offers both virtual and in-person opportunities for high school students to engage in the field of alcohol neuroscience. The virtual program blends scientific inquiry with creativity, welcoming participants from various backgrounds to explore the effects of alcohol and drugs on the brain while building a solid foundation in scientific principles. The in-person program allows students to gain hands-on research experience, providing an opportunity to articulate their findings and share their experiences with peers and mentors.
Virtual High School Program
The virtual program is a unique blend of scientific inquiry, creativity, and virtual engagement. Designed for both students with a passion for STEM and those new to the field, this program welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds. The curriculum provides a comprehensive exploration of the intricate effects of alcohol and drugs on the brain while addressing various aspects of neurological health and disease. Students will develop a strong foundation in scientific principles, preparing them for successful futures in science and related disciplines. Through our virtual sessions, participants will not only deepen their understanding of complex scientific concepts but also demonstrate their knowledge through creative projects.
In-Person High School Program
The in-person program offers a dynamic and immersive experience lasting five to six weeks, during which students can fully engage in laboratory work and scientific projects. Students will be able to dive into hands-on research, gaining invaluable skills and insights on alcohol research. The culmination of their dedication is showcased in a formal presentation or a poster session, providing them with an opportunity to present their findings and share their experiences with peers and mentors. This deepens their understanding of scientific methodologies and prepares them for future academic and professional pursuits in STEM fields.
